Meet the team
We are women in SAR, experts in our field, who work with SAR data in our day jobs and are deeply passionate about promoting women in our field.
We co-ordinate and organise Sisters of SAR 'not because these things are easy, but because they are hard'.
Our story
Our concept evolved out of discussions with Morgan Crowley of the Twitter handle @LadiesofLandsat (LOL) during a SAR training session in Ottawa, (Canada) in 2019. We were also encouraged by the IEEE Geoscience & Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) Inspire Develop Empower and Advance (IDEA) committee. We wanted a Twitter handle that spoke to the link with the LOL and conveyed our support of women in SAR. This challenge was taken up by Dr. Laura Dingle Robertson and Dr. Heather McNairn - both from Agriculture and Agri-food Canada - and Sarah Banks of Environment and Climate Change Canada. With Morgan’s input the team settled on a plan, and the Twitter handle @SistersofSAR (SOS) was born. Sarah originally obtained the Twitter feed name in August of 2019 and we officially launched on April 27, 2020! We realized very quickly that we would need help, and the very next day Dr. Gopika Suresh, who was then working with the Asian School of Environment/Earth Observatory of Singapore, stepped up! We have been actively tweeting since then and are currently at 8000 followers and more than 100 SAR Stars! We were also fortunate to receive support from Virginia Brancato of JPL NASA (California) and Órla Sheridan Postgraduate-Maynooth University, Ireland. And we are growing- Dr. Antara Dasgupta joined our organising team in June 2022!
