Our Vision

We envisage a representative and inclusive field of SAR remote sensing. By amplifying the voices of women and underrepresented communities, promoting them and showcasing their work, we strive to make sure no one feels invisible again.

Sisters of SAR is a voluntary initiative that officially launched on Twitter on April 27, 2020. Created and organised by women in SAR, we promote the exceptional work and accomplishments of other women in our field. In a field historically dominated by men, we help make sure that the work of women no longer goes unnoticed.

We tweet following a weekly schedule with #SARFact Monday, #TrainingTuesday, #DiversityDay on Wednesday where we give a shout-out to another Twitter initiative aimed at increasing diversity, #PictureDay on Thursday, and our #SAR_STAR feature on Friday’s where we highlight a #WomaninSAR and her research. Our SAR_STAR tweets helps increase visibility of the exceptional women in our field and creates a searchable list of women in the field of SAR remote sensing that other scientists, researchers and students around the world can use to find women mentors and allies. If you have not checked out our list of SAR_Stars, make sure you do so!

While our focus is increasing visibility and showcasing women in SAR and Remote Sensing, we also collaborate with other DEI oriented & remote sensing capacity building initiatives. We continue to ally and participate with @LadiesofLandsat and IEEE GRSS IDEA, ISPRS Student Consortium and others to help organise and moderate the monthly #GeoMixer, a networking event intended to bring members of our remote sensing community together. We are also currently collaborating with the #SARCapacityBuilding initiative to bring together SAR experts to the world through on-line webinars.
